'Freed to Run' continues fundraising path for Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, child services

Mile by mile, marathon by marathon, the fifth annual Freed to Run raised the total to $1.9 million donated to Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership.

Local attorney Mike Freed founded the event in 2017, initially running six marathons in six days by himself from the Supreme Court in Tallahassee to the Duval County Courthouse, to support civil legal aid to Northeast Florida pediatric patients and their families. It was such as success that it expanded to an annual fundraiser with several teams.

This year's benefit began Nov. 15 in Tallahassee and ended Saturday in Jacksonville raising $180,000, organizers said. With Baptist Health matching the funds at 125 percent, it brings the total raised in 2021 to $405,000 and the total over five years to $1.9 million.
